The Bacchae
About this event
Theodoros Terzopoulos returns to Euripides’ The Bacchae: an inexhaustible rebirth that continually raises new questions about myth, the body, power, and the crisis of the city. As the founder of the Attis Theatre and one of the leading international figures in the study of ancient tragedy, the director interprets Dionysus as a foreign, unsettling figure who defies all established order. The god arrives from the East, bringing with him a force that seduces and unsettles, undermining the certainties of the polis and revealing what the community would prefer to keep at bay. In this new production, the myth opens up to the present: Dionysus also becomes an archetype of the refugee, a body on a journey through wars, borders, and the Mediterranean, all the way to the shores of Crete or Lampedusa. The Bacchae reaffirms itself as a tragedy about the stranger, desire, violence, and what happens when a city refuses to acknowledge the force that throws it into crisis. The large cast includes: Roberto Latini as Dionysus, Alvia Reale as Agave, Enzo Vetrano as Cadmus, Stefano Randisi as Tiresias, Marco Cacciola as Pentheus, and Paolo Musio as the Chorus Leader.
