The award-winning Catalan choreographer Núria Guiu has been exploring the relationship between the body, images and power dynamics for years. Here, she draws on the photographic archives of hysteria at the Salpêtrière, the historic Parisian psychiatric hospital where women’s bodies were observed and staged as clinical cases, photographed and “fixed” in particular poses. In POV, Guiu expands this reflection on the gaze and the forms of control exerted over the body.
In POV, she uses the language of digital hyper-expression – selfies, memes, overexposure – as a tool for social and political critique, bringing to light the contradictions between visibility, control and emotions in our time. The title refers to the acronym for Point of View, a formula typical of digital platforms that here becomes a way of questioning how identity is constructed through images, stereotypes and the increasingly powerful need to be seen.
The performance begins as a lecture and gradually transforms, moving between storytelling, dance, images and video.
