Giorgia Lolli dedicates Body sweats (for Elsa) to Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, a poet and avant-garde artist and one of the most radical figures of the Dada movement. The title takes its name from the poetry collection Body Sweats, the Baroness’s erotic and proto-punk manifesto.
From this starting point, Lolli creates a performance combining dance, poetry reading and physical training, using sweat as a way of moving through both exertion and pleasure. On stage, four performers create a collage of danced and textual materials: love letters between friends and lovers, gymnastics in tiger-print bodysuits, poems, athletic gestures, and ironic, physical tributes to an artist who made the body a territory of freedom.
Born in Reggio Emilia in 1996, choreographer Lolli works between Italy and Finland, combining dramaturgical research, choreography and community practices. With Body sweats (for Elsa), she draws on the irreverent force of the Dadaist artist and reactivates it in a contemporary, energetic and unruly form, where the body sweats, reads, dances, quotes, desires and takes a stand.
