L’Infinito Carnale

Claudia Castellucci, choreographer and dramaturg, brings to the stage a form of dance that reactivates the ancient technique of pantomime, creating a rhythm for the text within which the dancers move, according to a principle of interdependence between the two languages.

The Carnal Infinite emerges from an imagined dialogue between Anthony of Egypt and Hilarion of Gaza, two third-century Christian hermits who chose the desert as a place of inner struggle. Hilarion reaches his master and asks him questions that trouble him, but Anthony’s answers, rather than guiding him, leave him bewildered.

In this barren landscape, poor in forms and matter, thoughts and inner images proliferate. The idea of the desert inspires a dance that attempts to create its forms from an absolute absence of comparison and history. The impulse to create something that does not exist reveals the need to represent the world, rather than simply use it.

Claudia Castellucci, recipient of the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale directed by Marie Chouinard, continues her rigorous research into the form of time as the foundation of dance.
