Che dolore terribile è l’amore
Premiere: World premiere: Festival d’Avignon, Avignon, 13 July 2026
About this event
Following The Vegetarian, Daria Deflorian brings another novel by South Korean writer Han Kang, winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature, to the stage: I Do Not Say Goodbye (Adelphi, 2024). In the performance, two friends embark on a journey that is at once dreamlike, historical and artistic, leading them to bring back from oblivion one of the darkest massacres in South Korean history: the suppression of the 1948 Jeju uprising, in which tens of thousands of unarmed civilians were killed. Rather than offering a straightforward historical reconstruction, the performance explores what that violence has left behind in bodies, words and the bonds between the living and the dead. It is a reflection on the importance of human connections as a source of hope in the face of the violence of the world.
Following its world premiere at the Festival d’Avignon, the production comes to Bologna for its Italian premiere.
